Sandra Foltz

After several years focusing her work on video and installation with a spirit and approach of experimentation, Sandra Foltz turned her attention to the object and the multiple, before turning to ceramics, accompanied and supported by drawing. Generally speaking, her works, playing with the absurd, display a certain taste for mystery and reflect a restless spirit tempered by notes of humor.
At present, she is producing ceramic volumes that reveal a kind of landscape in bits and pieces, a reflection of what passes through her, and thus inspires her. In this way, she has begun to construct, piece by piece, a discontinuous, fragmented landscape, made up of abstract forms accumulated with possible permutations and games of diverse associations. Her work deliberately avoids figuration and imitation, leaving the viewer free to question what they see and to play with different possible scales. Each form exists independently, with its own decorative features, textures and mystery, but is also part of a larger whole, which she sees as an evolving installation. Sandra Foltz titles each of her pieces with the names of women accused of witchcraft who have marked European history from the 15th century onwards, the passage through the kiln inducing for her and thanks to these titles the idea of mineral reincarnation through fire. Given arbitrarily, without any idea of formal kinship or resemblance, these names anchor the works in a history and a political memory, going beyond the notion of landscape. JMD
