Julia Huteau

Inspired by the philosophy of science, Julia Huteau sees herself as a researcher and adventurer. She began working with ceramics at a very early age, and has made this material the foundation of her practice, but her work has much broader ambitions. A master of the various shaping processes, she is never a slave to them, and the new tools and media she explores give her the possibility of new plastic discoveries, and are a pretext for getting out of the studio to engage in collaborations. From wood-firing in her early days, to digital drawing in her latest residency, and soon to video, Julia Huteau initiates a plastic questioning of the relationship between reality and virtuality, the famous Rebound explicitly mentioned in her latest series. From a "disengagement", from anecdote, from matter and its gravity, from its presence, for example by virtually drawing directly with color... to a "re-engagement" in the very concrete shaping of the pieces. New tones emerge from this back-and-forth work: movement, freedom, lightness, metamorphosis... Who could say whether these pieces, which Julia Huteau describes as "plump", were molded, cast, stamped or modeled before being assembled? These choices are discreet, but what ultimately counts for the viewer is the "life" of the forms, perhaps even their "vitality". Hence the importance of light and color in this work, which draws its inspiration from Johannes Itten, Ann Véronica Janssens and James Turrel. Each piece updates a possible world. CM
