Paul March
The ambiguous, indefinable forms proposed by Paul March materialize between the organic and the mineral, between the world of the living and the realm of death. Like hybrids of human organs or animals crawling vertically, they seem to have undergone a process of petrification at the end of their potential mutations. This brings to mind the famous Dog of Pompeii, found on site long after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD....
Previously a clinician specializing in neuropsychology, Paul March has been working for the past four years on a vast project, both theoretical and artistic, at the frontier between art, archaeology and cognitive science. His recent series of ceramic works are grouped under the title Blessings. Is form born of the mind or in the hands? The artist explores the idea that the power of the human mind does not derive directly from the properties of the brain, but rather from a spatial and temporal relationship between human gesture and changes in matter. Embarking on doctoral studies in archaeology at Oxford, Paul March developed his scientific conception in a lecture given at the London Chair of Theoretical Archaeology in March 2019. This research teaches us a great deal about our mental perception of objects and about human creativity, which takes place first and foremost in the world, precisely where the hands touch the earth, an unparalleled research tool for understanding this "spatial" localization of creation. His intuitive manual practice (which he describes as "neuromotor") has enabled him to establish a genuine collaboration with matter, with the latter taking the initiative and providing the impetus.
