Florence Bruyas
Florence Bruyas likes to work on the notion of visibility, or could we say in-visibility, i.e. on all those little things or details of everyday life to which we pay no attention, but which contribute to the order of the World. She doesn't use any particular technique, except to adapt each one to the project at hand, so as to best suit the discourse and atmosphere she wishes to create in her installations. She says that clay has a sensuality that enables her to give shape to the present... to her present, in her daily work with the material. For her third participation in the show, she is exhibiting one of her latest works, Les sans deuil, a large-format installation inspired by a somewhat unnoticed event that took place in China in 1958. Mao Zedong ordered the extermination of the European sparrow, one of several species accused of contributing to the decline in agricultural production. For three days, the population, from the youngest to the oldest, was mobilized to make noise. To the sound of drums, pans and rifle shots, sparrows, unable to fly for more than 2.5 hours without landing, fell from the sky or were killed with slingshots distributed to schools. The fritillary sparrow was eradicated, leading to an ecological imbalance and an invasion of insects that accentuated the conditions conducive to the greatest famine known to mankind (between 35 and 50 million human losses). The ruffed sparrow had to be reintroduced to China. A detail of history that was well worth a work of art! JMD
