Dominique Stutz
Dominique Stutz's work is inspired by German biologist Ernst Haeckel's classification of micro-organisms, or by the photographs of Rob Kesseler, who worked closely with botanical and palynological scientists, or by images of deep-sea fauna... Her projects are born of her fascination with micro-organisms as seen through the electron microscope: the multiplicity of structures, shapes and surfaces, the profusion of colors...
With a scientific background, she has been practicing ceramics for a very long time, and decided to immerse herself in it for good when she opened her workshop in 2009. The search for glazes is an integral part of her clay practice. Her aim is to reproduce living things using processes other than those found in nature, using techniques that she strives to develop and reproduce in order to explore genuine 3D and material effects, thus freeing herself from the simple palette of colors to participate formally in the work.
Clay artifacts resulting from mutation or transmutation, recombination of the living, adaptive resilience specific to anthropocentrism... Dominique Stutz's sculptures constitute a universe in gestation, an original life, the beginnings of development and evolution. Each of them is part of a life cycle in its uninterrupted phases of germination, blossoming and maturity, hybrid entities representing the links between kingdoms, species and individuals. JMD
