Claire Lézier
Claire Lézier's approach to ceramics is figurative and sculptural. She creates analogies and shifts between different moments in the history of art. For her, ceramics is a privileged means of dealing with themes arising from the world in which she lives, her own culture and her thirst to discover that of others. In 2020, she began to reflect on two intersecting themes: drapery and still life. As the marbles of classical antiquity are painted, she imagines an analogy between color on marble and enamels on porcelain. Formally, in sculpture, drapery is built either around emptiness or to cover a form. She researches the representation of drapery in Italian Mannerist and Baroque sculpture (Bernini), as well as in painting. Finally, she considers draping in popular culture and the world of entertainment, ghosts and comic strips. The cape of the magician who makes his doves disappear rubs shoulders with the drapery of religious art, Baroque sculpture and still lifes from the 17th century to Cézanne (Nature morte aux pommes et aux oranges). The constant telescoping of references and multiple points of view is a cornerstone of Claire Lézier's artistic approach. Plastically, in addition to chromatic challenges and virtuoso modeling, the artist infuses a certain magic tinged with humor, science fiction and fantasy. In all cases, she favors the subjective rather than the narrative, loving the links that develop over time between her pieces, creating moments of perplexing contemplation and enigmatic atmospheres.
