Christine Coste
Around the issue of the body, Christine Coste works on the interweaving of three specific plastic fields: ceramics, drawing and performance.
Whatever the medium, the forms complement, blend and extend each other in such a way as to provoke unsettling points of view and perspectives for the viewer. Rarely are there faces, except as hooded or buried, and expression is achieved through movement itself, whether in the drawings or through the articulation of the ceramic sculptures. Volumes are fluid, covered in a kind of graphic weave or mesh that she works with oxides or transfers, giving the illusion of a second skin, sometimes even resembling down or an animal carapace. It's all about metamorphoses, mutations, encounters and fusions at the heart of the living world. It's about the body and sensuality, not to say sexuality, so much so that the sculptures with their carnal contours seem to be animated from within, and endowed with an undeniable organic power. For the occasion of the show, Christine Coste has chosen to hang a few drawings alongside a series of recent sculptures, and to unveil her latest wood-fired works, created in the summer of 2022 as part of her residency with C14-PARIS, in the Anagama kiln at La Borne.
