Basile Boon
As a child growing up in the Meuse Valley, Basile Boon invented an inner world of construction games, craggy landscapes and legends of ruined castles, all of which have left their mark on his work as an artist. In 2010, while studying for a master's degree in archi- tecture at La Cambre (Brussels), he will create a cardboard city, the imaginary refuge, made up of houses perched on high, fragile pillars, as part of his Erasmus program at the Valencia School of Fine Arts.
Attracted by creation, in all its forms of expression and practice, Basile joined the Jeanne Toussaint Institute (Brussels), in the leather goods section. In 2017, he became interested in ceramics and took evening classes at L'académie Saint Gilles in Brussels. Fascinated by Facteur Cheval's free-spirited, stubborn character, he soon embarked on the construction of his own temple, La maison dorée.
His arrival in Paris in 2020, followed by a disappointment in love, turned his artistic practice upside down, and he invented a form of self-therapy in which humor and the desacralization of social codes acted as life-saving treatments. Materializing his joys, his sorrows, his fascinations, his disgusts, his encounters... He tells us, in matter and in words, his odyssey: his own mythology.
At odds with a society that demands excellence and specialization, Basile Boon sees himself as an eclectic generalist. His work is an imperfect and not unironic blend of art brut, pop culture, symbolic and mythological references, architecture and art. A form of inverted archaeology, in which Basile conjures up from the earth a civilization buried in his thoughts. JMD
