Flowers have played a significant role in European ceramics since the Renaissance (Della Robbia workshop in Florence). With the development of porcelain in the 18th century, flowers found their way onto centerpieces, pots- pourris and clock trimmings. Some combinations are daring, mixing elements of different origins, as on a famous mantel clock in the Ariana Museum in Geneva, which brings together 83 flowers in Vincennes porcelain around a group in Saxony porcelain.
