Farnaz Rabiejah wishes to inscribe her ceramics in the long lineage of Iranian ceramics, made up partly of traditional techniques and partly of innovation. She doesn't want to diverge or shock. And yet, by taking up the gladiolus motif, a powerful symbol of the war between Iraq and Iran between 1980 and 1988, and by raising the thorny issue of identity - Iranian on the one hand, and the underlying question of Iranian women on the other - Farnaz Rabiejah creates shocking works. Like Ronsard, Persian art knew how to put the allegorical significance of flowers into words and images. Dazzlingly beautiful one day, dead the next, the flower simultaneously lends its vulnerability and ephemeral nature to the representation of the cycle of life and the female sex. (...)
