Camille Azéma

Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, Camille Azéma discovered ceramics during an Erasmus year spent in Copenhagen (DK). Her singular approach to sculpture questions the relationship between body and material, movement of course, through the use of drapery, which she shapes very freely, combining earthenware with textiles or other materials, be they rope, leather, transport blankets or everyday objects.
She likes to speak of the memory of the body, and of her work as the materialization of absence. The folds and creases that meander across the surface of her loose forms always seem to irrigate her sculptures, giving them flesh, assimilating them to a certain order of the living, like a group of individuals whose singularity she can accentuate through color or texture.
From afar, the idealized or fantasized vision of the studio, where the works interact with the space, while closer up, and in view of the very material of the sculptures, the reading becomes blurred, revealing for each of them a genuine ambivalence, between seduction and repulsion. The body is never far away, which behind the fossilized folds or those of the fabric borrowed by the artist, constitutes the reactivated memory of our fragile humanity. JMD
